It is</em> <em>subdivided into anterior, middle and posterior compartments.</em> <em>T</em><em>he</em> <em>shape</em> <em>a</em><em>nd</em> <em>size</em> <em>o</em><em>f</em> <em>jugular</em> <em>foramen</em> <em>are</em> <em>related to</em><em> the </em><em>size</em> <em>o</em><em>f internal jugular vein and </em><em>th</em><em>e presence or ab</em><em>se</em><em>nce of</em> <em>a prominent superior jugular bulb.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Objective:</em></strong> <em>T</em><em>he a</em><em>i</em><em>m of t</em><em>h</em><em>e present study was to assess variations of </em><em>j</em><em>u</em><em>gular foramen</em> <em>in E</em><em>t</em><em>hiopian dried adult</em> <em>skulls.</em> <em>T</em><em>o our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind on Ethiopian skulls.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Methods and materials:</em></strong><em> Observation based descriptive study design was employed. The study was undertaken in 58 adult Ethiopian skulls. The diameters and areas of jugular foramen were determined using a sliding jaw vernier caliper. The presence of dome and septation were also examined.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Results: </em></strong><em> </em><em>T</em><em>he</em> <em>mean</em> <em>anteroposterior</em> <em>and</em> <em>mediolateral</em> <em>diameters</em> <em>and the</em> <em>area</em> <em>of jugular</em> <em>foramen</em> <em>are</em> <em>larger</em> <em>on the</em> <em>right side.</em><em> It has been observed that all the skulls had a jugular foramen bilaterally. </em><em>Out</em> <em>of</em> <em>the</em> <em>e</em><em>x</em><em>amined</em> <em>116</em> <em>jugul</em><em>a</em><em>r foramina, a domed</em> <em>bony roof</em> <em>was pr</em><em>e</em><em>sent in </em><em>6</em><em>3.79%</em> <em>bilaterally, in 18.9</em><em>7</em><em>% unilaterally on the </em><em>ri</em><em>ght, in</em> <em>9</em><em>.</em><em>90% skulls unilaterally on t</em><em>h</em><em>e left side,</em> <em>and</em> <em>it w</em><em>a</em><em>s absent bilaterally </em><em>i</em><em>n 6.90% of skulls. </em><em>T</em><em>he pre</em><em>s</em><em>ence of bilateral </em><em>p</em><em>artial</em> <em>bony septation was common and detected in 62.01% of the skulls.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Conclusions:</em></strong> <em>T</em><em>he</em> <em>v</em><em>arious</em> <em>m</em><em>easurements</em> <em>on</em> <em>t</em><em>h</em><em>e</em> <em>jugular</em> <em>f</em><em>oramen</em> <em>r</em><em>eported</em> <em>in our study sh</em><em>ed</em><em>s light on the</em> <em>size and </em><em>s</em><em>hape of </em><em>j</em><em>u</em><em>gular foramen and</em> <em>provide a baseline for further research on the foramen in Ethiopian skulls.</em></p> <p><em> </em></p> <p> </p>}, number={1}, journal={Ethiopian Journal of Health and Biomedical Sciences}, author={Jegnie, Mihretu Jegnie and Asmare, Yared and Muche, Abebe}, year={2020}, month={Sep.}, pages={55–63} }
